Take control of your debt before it starts controlling you

You are not alone

Many Americans are in debt, sometimes for circumstances beyond their control. It is difficult to prepare for unexpected events such as losing your job or a medical emergency. While being in debt is not ideal, it is certainly not something to be ashamed about. There are many options available to help you manage your debt.

Figure out how much debt you have

The first step to controlling your debt is to understand exactly how much debt you are in. Remember to include all sources of debt including credit cards, car loans, bills, etc. Once you have a grasp on your financial situation, start researching options that will help you manage your debt.

One option is to learn more about debt counseling companies. These types of organizations provide guidance on managing your finances, developing a budget and maintaining healthy financial habits. Counselors are trained in budgeting, debt management and consumer credit. They’ll discuss your personal situation with you and help you map out a plan that helps you address your problems.

Another option is to take out a debt consolidation loan. Basically, you are taking out a loan to pay off all of your debts. The benefit to this option is that you will only have to make one payment each month and that your interest rate on the loan may be less than the interest rate on your debt.

Whatever option you chose, remember to do your research beforehand.
